7 Signs Your Plant Has a Root Problem : Yellow leaves , slow growth and more

Healthy plants start below the surface. When roots are stressed, damaged, or poorly developed, the first warning signs often appear above ground.
Here are seven clues your plant may be telling you: check the roots.
1. The Plant Wilts Even When the Soil Is Moist
If a plant looks thirsty despite having enough water, the roots may not be absorbing moisture properly.
Possible causes include root damage, poor aeration, compacted growing media, or prolonged waterlogging.
What to do
Check that the pot or soil drains properly and avoid watering again until the root zone has had time to aerate. If the growing media is compacted, gently loosen it or repot into a better-draining mix.
For container plants, inspect the roots for dark, soft, or damaged tissue and remove badly affected roots before repotting.
2. Yellow leaves in plants
Yellow leaves are often blamed on nutrient deficiency, but sometimes the nutrients are there, and the roots simply cannot access them efficiently.
Poor root function can reduce the uptake of nitrogen, magnesium, iron, and other essential nutrients.
What to do
Before adding more fertiliser, check soil moisture, drainage, pH, and root condition.
Correcting the root-zone environment may be more effective than simply increasing fertiliser. Remove severely damaged roots if necessary and provide fresh, well-aerated growing media.
3. Growth Has Suddenly Slowed Down
A plant that stops producing new leaves, shoots, or flowers may be struggling below ground.
Limited root development means limited access to water and nutrients, which can restrict above-ground growth.
What to do
Check whether the plant has outgrown its container and inspect the root system.
If roots are healthy but limited by space, move the plant into a slightly larger container. Maintain consistent moisture and make sure the growing media remains loose enough for new roots to expand.
4. Roots Are Circling the Pot
Lift the plant gently from its container.
If you see a dense mass of roots wrapping around the outside of the root ball, your plant is probably root-bound.
What to do
Move the plant into a larger container and gently loosen tightly circling roots before replanting.
Use fresh growing media around the root ball so developing roots can expand into new space rather than continuing to circle.
This is also a good opportunity to apply mycorrhizal fungi directly around the roots.
5. Water Runs Straight Through the Pot
Water disappearing immediately through the drainage holes can indicate that the pot is packed with roots or that the growing media has become excessively dry and water-repellent.
What to do
Water slowly and in stages rather than pouring everything in at once.
If the plant is heavily root-bound, repot it. If the growing media has become extremely dry, gradually rehydrate it so water can penetrate throughout the root zone instead of flowing down the sides of the container.

6. The Plant Struggles After Transplanting
A little transplant stress is normal. Weeks of wilting and stalled growth aren't.
Successful establishment depends heavily on how quickly roots begin exploring their new environment.
What to do
Water thoroughly after transplanting and keep moisture relatively consistent while new roots establish.
Make sure there is good contact between the original root ball and the surrounding soil or growing media. Avoid excessive fertilizer immediately after transplanting.
Applying mycorrhizal fungi directly around the root zone at planting can also help establish the root–fungus association early.
7. The Top Looks Bigger Than the Root System Can Handle
Big leaves are great.
Big leaves supported by a weak root system? Not so great.
Roots provide the water, nutrients, and physical support needed to sustain everything happening above ground.
What to do
Focus on root establishment rather than pushing additional top growth.
Maintain appropriate watering, avoid excessive nitrogen fertilization, and give the plant enough root-zone space.
During transplanting or repotting, encourage root expansion with fresh growing media and good root-to-soil contact.

Give Your Roots Some Backup
One way gardeners can support root-zone development is through mycorrhizal fungi.
These beneficial fungi form an association with compatible plant roots and produce microscopic structures called hyphae, which extend into the surrounding growing media.
This can increase the effective area explored by the root–fungus system for water and nutrients, particularly relatively immobile nutrients such as phosphorus.
The key is root contact.
When using a mycorrhizal inoculant such as RootMax, apply it close to the roots during planting, transplanting, or repotting so the fungi have the opportunity to establish directly with the root system.
